Inlays │ An aesthetic and durable alternative to dental fillings made of plastic or amalgam

Many patients wish to replace their old fillings with a biologically harmless and durable material. Ceramic inlays are such an alternative in terms of function and aesthetics. Inlays are fabricated in dental laboratories or via a computer-controlled milling machine and are used for filling the rear teeth in the posterior region of the mouth.

Ceramic inlays are often chosen for aesthetic reasons. To decide which dental prosthesis is used for the dental restoration, whether it be an inlay, onlay, crown or veneer, depends on the aesthetic requirements and the state of the tooth. Whether the dental restoration is called an inlay, onlay or overlay is a question of interpretation. The transition between inlay-onlay-overlay are fluid and not clearly defined because fillings are usually fabricated from a dental impression in a dental laboratory and then glued or cemented into the tooth.

Ceramic inlays are very similar to the natural tooth enamel with regard to thermal conductivity and abrasion. The ceramic used today cannot cause allergic reactions.
